Education, Training & Development
Millbrook offer a range of opportunities to encourage students into the automotive industry and help to develop their skills, abilities and ambitions to ensure they reach their full potential. This in turn helps to enable the industry and Millbrook to continue developing and pushing boundaries with the fresh and enthusiastic talent.
'Open Industry' Initiative
Millbrook are proud to be part of the “Open Automotive Industry” scheme in 2011. As part of the Government and Industry initiative, this scheme aims to improve the image of manufacturing in order to attract the brightest and best talent. The government’s ‘See Inside Manufacturing’ initiative will be spearheaded by the UK automotive industry due to the great work already done, but will be rolled out through other industries over the next 5 years. The initiative will see nearly 30 automotive companies throw open their doors in October to enable school children and students to look behind the scenes at what a career in manufacturing or engineering could offer, encouraging the next generation of automotive engineers.
At the recent All-Party Parliamentary Motor Group debate, SMMT urged MPs to encourage investment in skills and training and raise awareness of automotive job opportunities, to aid the UK’s sustained growth aligned with a rebalancing of the economy. Vince Cable announced in January 2011 that, working with industry, BIS will build on local activites by individual companies to pull together a national “Open Day” programme to show young people and others the excellence in UK industry. In June 2011 there will be a number of co-ordinated regional events to promote the open days through teachers and career advisers. "Young people buy and use the latest gadgets and products but we also need them to think how exciting it could be to design, engineer or make them too," said Business Secretary, Vince Cable.
As a result of this initiative, Millbrook is proud to offer:
School Career Talks & Project Work
Millbrook Technicians and Undergraduates visit local schools in pairs, giving talks and allowing students to ask questions, with the aim to improve awareness of engineering among young people – aged 14-17 in particular. This is also followed up by laboratory and track tours for those students who show an interest in engineering.
Millbrook also support ‘Green Power’ – a school racing group set up to inspire young people. The scheme is available to a large scale of ages; Formula Goblin (primary school), Formula 24 (secondary), Formula 24+ (Further education), and The Corporate Challenge (for companies). Our engineers provide expert advice to those building vehicles, and offer our Track Facilities and equipment for their vehicle testing needs.

Work Experience Scheme
Working with EBP and Raytheon, Millbrook provide on-site days for fourteen to sixteen year old students to add value and real-life experience to their apprenticeship studies.
Young Enterprise Scheme
Our Undergraduates have the option to get involved with local schools on Enterprise days, either presenting to a class of young children (primary) or working as a mentor for older students for a full day or multiple days, supporting them as they learn about the business world. This charity exposes school children to the various aspects of business set-up, from meeting customer needs to covering costs and making profit, as well as product design and marketing strategy.
