Job Summary

Reporting to – Manager, Purchasing and Supply Chain

The Purchasing and Supply Chain department is responsible for the procurement of goods/services for Millbrook Proving Ground Ltd and the recently acquired Leyland Technical Centre in Lancashire.  Working with the Manager, Purchasing and Supply Chain and the broader team, the role involves sourcing a broad spectrum of items as effectively as possible, whilst ensuring technical, quality, project lead-times; commercial risk mitigation and competitive factors are achieved.  This focus will ensure that real value is provided to the organisation, whilst allowing it to meet its operational needs.

Having become an independent organisation in late 2013, Millbrook has and continues to follow a significant Capital Expenditure programme.  This has accelerated with Spectris taking ownership of Millbrook in September 2016, and brings wide-ranging procurement opportunities relative to the often limited commodity purchasing specialisation that candidates may expect to see in other organisations.

The Apprentice Buyer will primarily be working to assist and learn all aspects of procurement best practices in a fast paced environment. Key areas of focus will include Capital Expense (Capex) projects, specialist vehicle conversions components sourcing and Operational Expense (Opex) in support of the entire organisation.

Role Responsibilities

A high level of responsibility relative to the role will be given requiring the ability to multi-task and achieve tough deadlines. There will be a high degree of interaction with internal stakeholders and suppliers; therefore being able to communicate effectively will be an important part of the role.

The Apprentice Buyer (with the appropriate training and development) will support in all aspects of Purchasing including:

  • Assisting with the sourcing of goods/services
  • Analysing quotes to help identify the optimum position for Millbrook and learning how to develop sourcing recommendations as appropriate.
  • Assisting with managing suppliers to review and renegotiate to optimise financial, delivery and quality gains
  • Participating in various internal and external meetings
  • Understanding and becoming competent with Millbrook’s procurement systems and processes (Internal procedures and Microsoft Dynamics)
  • Supporting with the development of Requests for Quotations (RFQ)
  • Understanding how to support supplier audits with focus on Business Continuity (ISO 22301:2012)
  • Supporting with implementing opportunities for commercial and operational improvements to Opex spend
  • Learning and understanding basic contractual terminology in order to mitigate risk, and support with implementing new supplier agreements
  • Supporting and managing credit card based procurement, including the associated analysis
  • Processing and engaging with suppliers for order placement

There will also be a requirement for analytical support, preparing and supporting with key metrics to drive overall operational performance.

The candidate will benefit from a measured training and development plan to support with the understanding of Purchasing processes with particular focus on competitive tendering, analytical support and negotiation practices. There will be extensive use of specific computer software and a variety of communication tools. The experience should also give valuable insights into behaviours and practices of a Medium to Large sized Enterprise as well as a detailed and interesting introduction to the Motor Industry.

Qualifications

  • 5 GCSE’s in the following subjects Maths, English and Science grades A* to C
  • AS or A-Level’s in STEM subjects grade A* to C

Experience

  • Training and development within a similar role/discipline is desirable but not essential
