Principal Engineer – Technical Excellence Vehicle Group

Job Summary

This role is reporting to the Chief Engineer of the Vehicle Group. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for driving technical excellence throughout all test activities in our Component, Durability and Measurement departments by developing procedures and supporting test work by providing technical guidance. They will be challenged to develop existing and new procedures, validate calculation methods used during data processing and maintaining uncertainty of measurement budgets. Responsibility will also be given for ensuring the timely processing of all KPIs and metrics relating to technical excellence of the Vehicle Group including document reviews and the process improvement management system.

Role Responsibilities

  • Develop existing test procedures and new test methodologies

  • Support the development of, and approve data templates for customer issue

  • Validate calculation methods

  • Develop and maintain uncertainty of measurement budgets
  • Support internal and external audits
  • Manage Vehicle document reviews
  • Manage any relevant Vehicle process improvement management system entries
  • Provide technical guidance and training to department managers and test engineers
  • Provide technical support and guidance on test programmes as required
  • Support the quotation process by providing technical content (in area of expertise)
  • Validate technical content of commercial offerings (quotation process)
  • Coordinate the preparation of bids and collaborations in public and private consortia and competitions
  • Keep up to date on latest technology trends, market drivers and opportunities for investment in tools, techniques and capital equipment
  • Present developments to staff, customers and senior leadership as appropriate
  • Act in accordance with behaviours for Millbrook staff at all times





  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Engineering or Science Degree qualification


  • Experience with instrumentation
  • Experience in a range of engineering disciplines
  • Significant experience in product testing
  • A demonstrable expertise in data analysis and mathematics
  • An understanding of reliability and measurement techniques
  • Familiarity with the requirements of ISO 17025, ISO 9001, ISO 45001
  • Ability to represent the interests of Millbrook at government and as part of industry bodies, including bodies such as the SMMT, IMechE and others


  • Ability to interpret procedures and standards
  • A good understanding of vehicles and vehicle sub-systems
  • A keen eye for detail and curiosity on developing technologies and industry trends
  • Strong communication skills and grasp of communication methods, research and presentation
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change, including seeking out new customers and industries/sectors for future growth
