Senior Engineer - Propulsion

Job Summary

Reporting to – Senior Engineer with DMR

Responsible for delivering technical excellence and customer service within the Propulsion Department at Leyland.  Working specifically within a team to deliver the JLR Framework contract and other technically demanding projects throughout the department.  To oversee Engineers and Technicians working on the JLR Framework ensuring data integrity and delivery of a quality service.  Providing assistance throughout the department where required.

Work with customers and suppliers to develop appropriate services / testing specifications within the Hybrid and EV sector.

Support a culture of continuous improvement to help drive improvements in safety and security, customer service, technical excellence and effective investment in new equipment. 

Role Responsibilities

Health, Safety, Environment & Security

  • Ensure appropriate PPE is being used at all times in designated areas
  • Ensure H&S procedures & processes are appropriate and being applied
  • Ensure appropriate security measures are in place and being used in the labs
  • Create and maintain risk assessment for the tests in the area of responsibility


Customer service

  • Liaise with the customer to ensure the project is delivered on time and to their expectations
  • Liaise with customer engineers to obtain feedback relating to performance improvements
  • Develop improved systems of work, data handling and manipulation to improve technical excellence and efficiency of operation
  • Deliver test reports accurately (RFT) and on time (OTD)
  • Report regularly to customers as required

Technical excellence

  • Design test set ups, test rigs and installations
  • Validate test data
  • Identify faults or failures of test samples or set up
  • Generate test reports to meet customer requirements
  • Analyse and present data, findings and results to customers and peers
  • Efficiently deliver projects with a high degree of complexity or challenge to a high professional standard
  • Provide technical support to customers and the Commercial Team



  • Ensure project documentation is up to date and consistent
  • Validate test reports in line with regulations and certifications
  • Maintain and update technical procedures
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures
  • Comply with appropriate ISO procedures
  • Act as UKAS “Head of Lab” where/when appropriate
  • Act as Quality Representative for the department and assist in the clearing of non-conformances.


Human Resources

  • Train Engineers in best practise
  • Disseminate technical knowledge across Departments


Financial performance

  • Ensure projects are delivered on time using the agreed level of resources and support the manager with accurate information from the area of specialisation for the department Forecast
  • Develop initiatives to reduce waste and optimise efficiency

Delegated Management responsibility (where agreed):

  • Recruit all Engineers in conjunction with Senior Manager/Manager/HR
  • Identify development needs and create appropriate training plans
  • Maintain up to date Engineers and Senior Engineers skills matrix
  • Complete performance reviews and set SMART objectives
  • Encourage all Engineers development in line with company objectives
  • Address performance, absence, timekeeping, capability, behaviours and monitor holidays, time cards, overtime etc.




  • Educated to HND or Engineering degree level or equivalent qualification or experience


  • Experience of working in a mechanical engineering environment and engine test cells. Familiar with and have experience testing modern passenger car and commercial Powertrain products
  • Use of test cell IT including Etas INCA
  • Familiarity of 48V hybrid systems.
