Apprentice – Powertrain Engine Test

Job Reference: PT U6 2
Shift Pattern: Days
Location: UTAC Millbrook, Bedford

Job Description

Reporting to: Supervisor

As part of the Millbrook Powertrain Department the Engine Technology Centre (ETC) is split into three main areas. The engine test lab has 16 test cells where all testing is carried out, a large preparation area where all engines are worked on before and after test and an engineering office where the engineering staff oversee each test.

The ETC carries out a huge range of tests on all types of engines. These tests can range from simple power tests to complicated emission tests where hundreds of different measurements are taken every second and recorded for investigation. To support these tests you will learn how to strip and build prototype engines to a very high standard and report on the pre and post-test condition of components on test.

To set up engines for test you will be shown how to weld, fabricate and modify parts using lathes, milling, welding and other machine tools to ensure the installation matches the real world install of the engine in the vehicle as close as possible.

Other skills required will be how to instrument the engines with various measurement probes that include temperature, pressure, strain, flow, and other equipment that can measure every part of a running engine. To read and record this data, PC skills will be key, as will communication.

You will also be involved in maintenance, repair and calibration of all test lab equipment and the day to day servicing and repairs of engines in test.
