Job Summary

Primary function to supervise the day to day operations associated with the Department. Supervise the technician staff and facilities to ensure a safe and efficient operation.

All equipment and plant must be kept running at all times and the ability to find solutions to problems when they arise is paramount to the productivity of the laboratory.  Drive a culture of continuous improvement in health, safety, environment & security, customer service and technical excellence.

In addition to the above the Supervisor may be expected to carry out Technician duties as time allows and dependent on business needs in agreement with the Manager.

Roles and responsibilities

Health, Safety, Environment & Security

  • Ensure appropriate PPE is being used at all times in designated areas by your team
  • Maintain RAMS for standard activities
  • Responsible for stopping any activity that does not comply with health, safety, environment and security policy and procedures
  • Ensure H&S procedures & processes are appropriate and being applied by your team
  • Ensure appropriate security measures are in place and being used in the labs by your team

Customer service

  • Work with engineering teams to plan and deliver work to agreed timings
  • Schedule appropriate levels of resource to deliver customer expectations
  • Collect and maintain KPI and OEE data
  • Liaise with customer engineers to obtain feedback relating to performance improvements

Technical excellence

  • Ensure Technicians are qualified to perform the tasks they are assigned
  • Support/lead improvement activities
  • Keep up to date the lab maintenance schedule
  • Maintenance and upkeep of equipment
  • Ensure high levels of housekeeping and a professional appearance of labs at all times


  • Manage facility maintenance, calibration and improvement programmes
  • Comply with ISO 9001, 14001, 17025, 22301, 27001, 45001 procedures where appropriate
  • Ensure Technicians adhere to company policies and procedures

Human Resources

  • Recruit Technicians in conjunction with Department Manager/HR
  • Identify development needs and create appropriate training plans
  • Maintain up to date Technicians skills matrix
  • Complete performance reviews and set SMART objectives
  • Encourage Technicians’ development in line with company objectives
  • Address performance, absence, timekeeping, capability, behaviours and monitor holidays, time cards, overtime etc.

Financial performance

  • Organise available space and equipment to ensure an effective and profitable operation including local 5S and standardisation of tooling & equipment
  • Work with other managers/supervisors to ensure effective use of resource across all operational areas
  • Ensure work by Technicians is in-line with quotations and flag any issues as soon as they become apparent
  • Authority to purchase items to support work and improvement actions up to an agreed amount in line with departmental budgets and financial objectives


  • Liaise with support departments including Facilities, HR, Finance, Purchasing, Health, Safety, Environment & Security on all departmental related matters
  • Act in accordance with the behaviours for Millbrook employees at all times

Essential Criteria


  • City and Guild in Automotive or Engineering
  • Full Automotive / Engineering apprenticeship or HNC


  • Must have a large breadth of experience leading and supervising a team
  • Experience / understanding of hydraulic ring mains would be an advantage
  • Experience of working in a Test and Development environment would be an advantage
