Job Summary

The Millbrook Vehicle Measurement Group (VMG) uses Millbrook’s tracks to conduct tests on a wide range of vehicles and systems. The scope of the work carried out within VMG can be described as whole-vehicle chassis based testing covering development, analysis, and type approval of the following core subjects:

  • Instrumentation and Road Load Data (RLD) collection and analysis, using sensors including accelerometers, strain gauges, displacement transducers, pressure transducers, and more
  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including use of driving robots and soft targets
  • Whole vehicle development and type approval tests for;
    • Internal and external noise.
    • Brakes, including Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS)
    • Steering effort and functionality
    • Static stability tilt
    • Fuel economy and component tuning
  • Vehicle dynamics and performance, including ride and handling assessments
  • Hub dynamometer fuel and lubricant performance assessment
  • Military test programmes, involving test work detailed above and more specific Military test requirements

After any test work has been completed, the successful candidate would be responsible for analysing and validating test data, and writing technical reports for issue to the customer.

Role Responsibilities

Initially the Undergraduate’s main role will be to work alongside the experienced and skilled technicians to learn how the group operates, how test vehicles are prepared and tested, and how to use the equipment.  Over time, the Undergraduate will work more closely with the Engineers assisting and running tests, before eventually running some of the tests autonomously.  They will also be required to demonstrate the following abilities:

  • Customer liaison and man-management
  • Assessment and mitigation of risk
  • Test planning and implementation
  • Effective time management
  • Report writing and data processing

During the student’s time in VMG, they will acquire a good understanding of how vehicle chassis systems, and whole vehicles, are tested and evaluated. They will gain extensive experience with a wide variety of automotive vehicles. The Undergraduate will also learn how to interpret and satisfy customer requirements, analyse data as the customer needs it, and carry out test work alongside customers.

Person Specification


  • Studying for BEng/MEng Automotive / Mechanical/ Electrical Engineering Degree (preferred)

  • SC clearance or ability to achieve this (UK national with residency in the UK for the last 5 years)
