Job Summary

The Propulsion Vehicle Test department consists of 3 sub-departments: 

  • Heavy duty exhaust emissions and fuel economy / climatic work – Variable Temperature Emission Chamber (VTEC)
  • Two state of the art, fully climatic, 4WD light duty vehicle exhaust emissions and fuel economy test cells (VEL)
  • Track based fuel economy testing using Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS)

They will be responsible for:

  • Worldwide Regulated Testing for emissions, fuel economy, CO2, HVAC, Defrost/Demist, Energy Consumption / Range, Vehicle Performance
  • Custom Test Cycles for trucks, busses, cars, vans, baggage trucks, etc
  • Test Development, Calibration & Certification
  • Solution Finding and problem solving
  • Real World Emissions & Fuel Economy Studies using Millbrook’s track facilities
  • Customers range from most vehicle OEM’s, Government, Petrochemical companies, system manufacturers, MoD, etc.

Role Responsibilities

The Undergraduate’s main responsibilities will be to get involved with the general day-to-day running of tests and equipment in the department, this will include:

  • Hands-on experience working alongside experienced Technicians and Engineers on whole vehicles, engines, Powertrain components & test equipment
  • Office-based experience, working with and for the Propulsion Engineers, planning test programmes, supporting test activities, liaising with customers, processing test data and writing reports

During the first stage of the placement, the undergraduate will gain invaluable hands-on experience working on a wide variety of Powertrain projects and test equipment within the VEL, VTEC and PEMS Teams. Learning about the latest Powertrain developments in emissions after-treatment components and systems, test technology, as well as innovation in hybrid, electric vehicles and alternative fuels. The undergraduate will be expected to work alongside the highly trained technicians to set up and perform a wide range of tests for a number of different customers.

Following the time within the Operations team, the undergraduate will move to the Engineering office and work alongside the Engineers to manage complete test programmes. By the end of the 54 week placement it would be expected that the undergraduate will have sole responsibility for managing all aspects of test programmes assigned to them.

The undergraduate will gain invaluable experience working with a wide variety of automotive and non automotive products and companies, learning from a team of professional and experienced test Technicians and Engineers.

Person Specification


  • Studying for BEng/MEng Automotive / Mechanical Degree (preferred)

Experience (desirable)

  • Vibration and climatic testing equipment
  • Working with high voltage systems
  • Automated systems and PLC’s
  • Customer service skills
  • Report writing
