Engineer – Calibration

Reporting to: Manager – Calibration


UTAC provides vehicle test, validation and engineering services to customers in the automotive, transport, tyre, petrochemical, defence and security industries. It is independent and impartial in everything it does.

It has a range of test facilities for components and full vehicles. These include varied indoor and outdoor test tracks in the UK and Northern Finland, engine dynamometers, environmental chambers, crash laboratories and advanced emissions chassis dynamometers.

Job Description

As a Calibration Engineer, you would be responsible for conducting calibration and repair operations, following procedures and ensuring compliance with client contractual and KPI obligations. Additionally, you will required to act as deputy for Manager – calibration.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Calibration, processing and record keeping of instrumentation to traceable and UKAS standards (ISO 17025:2017)
  • Identify and develop productivity improvement opportunities and support operational efficiency projects and KPIs
  • Maintain calibration instrumentation, equipment, and facilities to required standards (5S)
  • Conduct all duties in accordance with company health and safety procedures, policies and safe system of Work
  • Complete all assigned quality and continuous improvement activities in accordance with company procedures
  • Produce, review, develop and audit calibration procedures in accordance with company requirements and from clients and auditor recommendations
  • Provide technical support and guidance on request
  • Participate in inter-laboratory measurement audits
  • Participate in external/internal audits as required within the facility
  • Undertake analysis of results, including statements of conformity or opinions and interpretations
  • To report, review and provide authorisation of results
  • Act in accordance with the behaviours for UTAC CERAM Millbrook staff at all times
  • Calibration of a wide range of measurement instruments to customer requirements
  • Sign-off of internal and external calibrations
  • Training and mentoring
  • Measurement uncertainty budget authoring and maintenance
  • Provide metrology support and advice to other technical departments
  • Determine whether calibration capability is compatible with customer requirements
  • Develop new calibration methods in accordance with customer requirements
  • Assist with internal and external audits
  • Lead continuous improvement projects
  • Document and maintain existing standards, processes, KPIs and record keeping

Person Specification

  • Formal qualification in a relevant engineering discipline (preferably electrical / metrology based qualification at HND or Degree level)
  • Min. 5 years UKAS laboratory experience at calibration technician level or equivalent 
  • Extensive demonstrable understanding of metrology, both practical and theory. 
  • Broad Knowledge of 17025:2017, ISO 9001
  • Uncertainty budget formulation (GUM, M3003 etc.)
  • Technical Procedure writing
  • Experienced in Calibration (CMS) and Quality Management Systems (QMS)
  • Advanced spreadsheet user
  • Good mathematical and statistical understanding
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organisational, analytical and problem solving skills
