Job Description

Reporting to: Principal Engineer – Propulsion Engine Test

UTAC’s engine testing department covers a range of propulsion technologies from single cylinder research to full engine development, calibration and validation. From fuels to hybridisation hardware testing, a role in the Propulsion Engine Test department is extremely varied and dynamic. The role of the Graduate Engineer typically includes exposure and responsibility of a particular project overseen by a Senior or Principal Engineer. This engineer will act as a mentor initially, allowing development of the successful applicant until they are in a position to have sole responsibility for delivery of a particular project.  The core functions of the role are heavily dependent on the type of the project and may range from interpreting simulated drive cycle emissions data to fulfilling innovative testing design requests for future technologies testing.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

  • To deliver engineering objectives set by the Principal or Senior Engineer
  • Assist with interpreting customer requests into a real world test setup
  • Build an understanding of a variety of data analysis software, measuring equipment and testbed systems
  • Test execution ensuring the collection of robust and valid data that meets customer requirements
  • Test data handling, analysis and presentation
  • Implement improvements to working practises, document changes and generate work instructions
  • Provide customer consultation, recommending design and testing solutions which increase awareness of the department’s capabilities
  • Track project efficiency and maintain project related invoicing
  • Function well within a team environment, leaning on the wealth of knowledge and experience already present within the department
  • Undertake analysis of results, including statements of conformity or opinions and interpretations
  • To report, review and provide authorisation of results
  • Act in accordance with the behaviours for UTAC colleagues at all times

 

Person Specification

Qualifications
  • To be considered for this role you must be studying towards or completed a degree in a relevant automotive/engineering degree subject
Core competencies:
  • Completed or working towards a relevant automotive/engineering degree
  • Strong understanding of gasoline and diesel engine mechanical fundamentals
  • An awareness of future technologies e.g. hydrogen, eMotors, hybridisation etc
  • Previous “hands on” experience with engines is favourable
  • Experience with CAD packages preferable but not essential
Advantageous Qualities:
  • Organisation and project management skills
  • Lead structured problem solving
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications especially MS Excel
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organisational, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Understanding of H&S practices
