Senior Engineer – CEC Fuels Testing

Job Description

Reporting to: Manager – ICE Engineering Team
Senior Engineer in the Engine Test Centre at UTAC Millbrook.

Candidate will be a senior member of a dedicated team to support fuel and additive testing to the Co-Ordinating European Council (CEC) methodology as requested by major Petrochemical customers.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Ensure all H&S and quality procedures have been adhered to.
  • Run customer engine test programs relating to fuel and oil additives with high levels of efficiency.
  • Generate engine installation packs and schematics for accurate test bed setups
  • Work in compliance with CEC and ISO17025 procedures and best practice.
  • Identify engine/test delivery faults and lead effective solutions.
  • Processing and validation of engine test data.
  • Analysing engine data and understanding correct trends and causes for concern.
  • Generate ISO-standard test reports tailored to specific customer requirements.
  • Track project efficiency and maintain project related invoicing.
  • Deliver engine fuels testing projects for a variety of customers as part of a dedicated team.
  • Devise and lead initiatives to reduce waste and optimise efficiency.
  • Develop best working practises and provide training to colleagues.
  • Undertake analysis of results, including statements of conformity or opinions and interpretations.
  • To report, review and provide authorisation of results.
  • Take ownership of multiple engine variants - responsible for technical updates and efficiency improvements.
  • Work towards becoming Subject Matter Expert in all CEC test methods offered at UTAC Millbrook.
  • Work towards becoming Subject Matter Expert in ISO17025 for CEC tests offered at UTAC Millbrook.
  • Responsibility of localised work planning and work load for UTAC Millbrook CEC Engineering team.
  • Act in accordance with the behaviours for UTAC staff at all times

 

Person Specification

Qualifications:
  • Automotive/Mechanical Engineering HND, Degree or relevant experience
Core competencies:
  • Understanding of engine fundamentals and materials characteristics.
  • Appreciation of electrical and mechanical engine diagnostics.
  • Use of engine test cell equipment & software including engine dynos, instrumentation and calibration tools.
  • Experience and understanding of emissions measurement equipment would be advantageous.
  • Understand of fuel and oil additive testing techniques specifically as defined by the CEC is advantageous but not required as would direct experience of running CEC testing in a test cell environment.
  • Working knowledge and experience of Horiba STARS test automation system ideal, in depth knowledge of other automation systems advantageous.
  • Data interpretation, critique and presentation, using Excel and/or AVL Concerto.
  • Ability to write formal reports using UTAC standard templates.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong organisational, analytical and problem solving skills.
Advantageous Qualities:
  • 2 years minimum experience in an automotive engineering discipline
  • Understanding of Fuel & Lubes industry advantageous.
  • Test bed experience in an automotive testing environment.
  • Engine validation exposure, including basic engine management systems would be advantageous.
  • Good understanding of gasoline and diesel engine mechanical fundamentals.
  • Instrumentation experience (thermocouples, pressure transducers etc.).
  • Exposure to test bed controls (PID controls, throttle/speed/torque) together with some understanding in how to create test automation procedures/schedules.
  • Specialist fuel and additive handling and blending advantageous but not required.

  • Full UK driving licence & own transport (UTAC is not easily assessable via public transport)
