Technician Machinist – Vehicle – UTAC Leyland



UTAC provides vehicle test, validation and engineering services to customers in the automotive, transport, tyre, petrochemical, defence and security industries.  It is independent and impartial in everything it does.

Job Description

Reporting to – Supervisor – Vehicle

A key position within the Vehicle team and the wider Leyland site.  The position is responsible for the machining activities required to support the setup of bespoke test rigs within the Vehicle team but also for the other teams within the site.

Working closely with the engineering team to review engineering drawings, offer advice and provide time estimates for machining jobs.  Machining of one-off components, carry out repairs to test or rig components and support some site services activities.


Role & Responsibilities
  • Operate various manual machines within the shop:
    • Milling machine
    • Jig borer
    • Centre lathe
    • Capstam lathe
    • Surface and tool grinders
  • Review engineering drawings
  • Ensures safe operation of machines at all times
  • Day to day maintenance and housekeeping of Machine Shop
  • Provides basic level of Facility breakdown diagnostics and resolution
  • Act in accordance with the behaviours for UTAC staff at all times


Person Specification

  • Time served machinist
  • Use of manual machines
  • Reading of engineering drawings
  • Working with tolerances
  • Some basic software and PC skills would be an advantage
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and computer based file structures
  • Strong oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organisational, analytical and problem solving skills

Physical Requirements
  • The successful candidate is required to have manual handling experience of a load approx. 25kg activities will include bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, hand-eye coordination, and manual dexterity
  • Standard day shift – 37 hours over 4.5 days
  • Flexibility to travel as and when required
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Willing to undergo a Criminal Disclosure check
  • NOTE: This position be will based on site – Leyland, Lancashire
