Video: Millbrook Demonstrates High-Performance Capability of its 4WD Powertrain Test System

Millbrook, a leading independent vehicle test and validation service provider, has successfully conducted a series of extensive tests on its 4WD Powertrain Test System with a McLaren 720S. This demonstrates that Millbrook’s facility can manage aggressive acceleration and extreme performance within a highly controlled environment. It can test both 2WD vehicles with very high power outputs, such as the McLaren, and 4WD cars accurately and safely.

This facility is in high demand for the development of propulsion systems, transmissions and advanced vehicle control strategies, and is amongst the most sophisticated of its type. It has four 350kW wheel hub-mounted high dynamic dynamometers and a 350kW battery emulator. It can be used to test laid-out powertrains (PIL) or full vehicles (VIL).

Phil Stones, Chief Engineer Propulsion at Millbrook, says: “We designed this facility to allow the accelerated and accurate development of internal combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles in the areas of emissions, fuel economy, performance and vehicle driveline control systems. The testing conducted demonstrates its ability to cope with high-performance vehicles, including supercars and racing cars.”

While the exact details of the tests conducted are confidential, the vehicle’s full performance was utilised. The test data were gathered in a safe, repeatable and accurate way, which would have been significantly more difficult on the road or test track.

This facility enables an easier and quicker approach to the development of launch control strategies, traction control, torque vectoring, vehicle performance analysis, gear shift strategies, fuel consumption strategies and hybrid control strategies.
